Adam Krieger was a German Baroque composer and hymn-writer. He was born on January 7, 1634, in Driesen, Neumark (now Drezdenko, Poland). Krieger is considered to be one of the most varied and talented composers of the 17th century. He was known for his keyboard and vocal works and his ability to incorporate different styles and techniques in his compositions.
Krieger began his music career as a choirboy at the age of 11 at the Collegium illustre in Stargard. He became an organist at the Our Lady Church in Frankfurt (Oder) in 1657, and later at the Marienkirche in Zittau in 1660. Krieger then moved to Leipzig in 1663, where he became the director of music at the University Church of St. Pauli and worked alongside Johann Kuhnau.
Krieger composed a significant number of vocal works, including cantatas, motets, and hymns. Many of his works were written for use in church services. He was a prolific hymn-writer, and his works were published in several collections, including the famous Neu Leipziger Gesangbuch (New Leipzig Hymnal) in 1682.
Krieger was also known for his instrumental music and was admired for his keyboard works. His keyboard compositions included suites, preludes, and toccatas, which were popular during the Baroque period.
