The alto clarinet is part of the family of clarinets in the clarinet choir and full modern concert band. In this clarinet family the instruments alternate in the keys of Eb and Bb and include the Eb soprano, Bb soprano, Eb alto, Bb bass, Eb contra-‐Alto, and Bb contra-‐bass clarinets.

E♭ The alto clarinet is a woodwind instrument of the clarinet family. It is a transposing instrument pitched in the key of E♭, though instruments in F have been made.

four octaves The clarinet has a range of four octaves! On the clarinet, playing C and blowing hard produces a high G. The clarinet is the only wind instrument that can reach such high notes. With more tone holes than the recorder and an extended register, the clarinet takes full advantage of this property.

The keys of the contra-alto are similar to the keys on smaller clarinets, and are played in the same way. Some contra-alto clarinet models have a range extending down to low (written) E♭, sounding as the lowest G♭ on the piano (aka G♭1), while others can play down to low (written) C, sounding E♭1.
