middle In its simplest terms, 'mezzo' (literally meaning 'middle' in Italian') is the middle range for a female singer.

If the sopranos split in half, a mezzo will sing the lower melody as typically, a mezzo vocal timbre is darker than the soprano. In opera mezzo-sopranos most often hold supporting roles and 'trouser roles' – in other words, male roles sung by a female singer.

This clef is sometimes used for the notation of the mezzo soprano part because it facilitates the printing of the part with minimal use of ledger lines. This clef is rarely used.

Treble clef, also known as G clef, is primarily used to notate melodies and chords that are intended to be played with the right hand. Think of the treble clef staff as a sort of musical compass that helps us orient ourselves on the musical staff.
