Church music is Christian music written for performance in church, or any musical setting of ecclesiastical liturgy, or music set to words expressing propositions of a sacred nature, such as a hymn.

In most cases, church music is specifically designed for worship. It can range from hymns to Gregorian chants to modern praise and worship music. But church music is more than just a collection of melodies and lyrics. It is a powerful expression of faith that touches people's hearts and souls.

All music, architecture, poetry and learning was cultivated by the church. Composers were churchmen and musicians got their training as church choirboys. The role of music in the medieval church was to embellish or accompany prayer. It was intended to create a mood of peace, contemplation and spirituality.

Church music, hymnals, gospel and worship music are a part of Christian media and also include contemporary Christian music which itself supports numerous Christian styles of music, including hip hop, rock, contemporary worship and urban contemporary gospel.

Music has a way of piercing into the deep parts of our soul, that assists in our expression and response to God and to the church. Singing helps unites us to the church. The gospel alone unites believers to one another. However, music is a tool that allows us to do so.

Within the creed, the nature of the Church is made clear in the final verse - I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. The words one, holy, catholic and apostolic are often called the four marks of the Church.
