bouzouki

bouzouki, also spelled buzuki, long-necked plucked lute of Greece. Resembling a mandolin, the bouzouki has a round wooden body, with metal strings arranged in three or four double courses over a fretted fingerboard.

The bouzouki belongs in the family of instruments with long neck, like the Saz, the Tamboura etc. The name Bouzouki its believed that it emanates from the word Bozouk that means broken obviously in the change that came to the instrument from the Eastern and Central Asia.

This is a premium musical instrument, a replica of the rebetika genre bouzouki. It arrived in Greece in the 1900s by Asia Minor immigrants and soon became one of the most popular traditional string musical instruments.

A decent Bouzouki will have a lot more volume in the “low mid- range” as well as the “brightness” of the upper register. A guitar has more bass, and more sustain. Of course this is subjective, and varies with the position of the pick stroke, relative to the bridge.

The Bouzouki is a long-necked Lute developed in Greece from its Turkish roots. Originally 6 stringed, it now usually has 8 strings tuned CFAD. It was picked up by Irish musicians travelling abroad and adapted for their use by retuning to GDAE or GDAD.

Note: Roundback Greek bouzoukis have a longer scale length around 670mm, and are usually tuned to CFAD. Many flat back "Irish style" bouzoukis have a shorter neck, from around 610mm upwards, though they do also come with the full 670mm neck. String gauges need to be chosen to suit the neck length and tuning.

Is the Bouzouki Hard to Learn? In short: I would say that the bouzouki is for the most part easier to learn compared to the acoustic guitar, but it does come with some unique challenges. Now, if you are new to fretted string instruments, all of them will feel challenging to you.
