xun, Wade-Giles romanization hsün, Chinese vessel flute made of pottery, one of the oldest known Chinese instruments. In its most common form it is egg-shaped with a flattened bottom, and there are five finger holes - three on the front and two (for thumbs) on the back. Its range is about one octave.

This unique instrument is played by covering holes with the musician's fingers, while blowing across the mouth hole. With a range of about two octaves, the tone colour of this instrument is mellow – and at times, haunting in nature.

The xun is one of the oldestmusical instrumentsin China, with a history of approximately 7,000 years. It is said that the xun originated from the hunting tool of the stone meteor.

In terms of the shapes, most ocarinas are shaped like a handgun or submarine and have 4-12 finger holes. Nowadays the most popular pot Xun have 8 or 10 finger holes and can be found in a variety of shapes such as a gourd, brush pot or fish (link to 1st article about the different types of Xun).

An ocarina is a type of wind instrument, or aerophone, in which sound is produced by the vibration of air. Unlike flutes, ocarinas are not tubes but consist of one or more enclosed, rounded chambers. The actual tuning process is a simple matter of opening out holes one at a time using a chromatic tuner to check the pitch. Then tune your xun following these steps: Tune holes 1 to 3 (2 to 4 scale degrees) by drilling them out one at a time, checking the pitch with your tuner and adjusting as need be.
