Word painting is when the melody of a song actually reflects the meaning of the words. The best way to learn about it is to listen.

Arco: Italian for bow. Written in after passages of pizzicato (plucked) notes. Means to return to playing with the bow.

The word leggiero is Italian for 'light' or 'lightly'. The term is used on a musical score – typically in relation to swift passages – to indicate the musician should play the relevant section with a light, delicate and graceful touch.

From the dynamic point of view, music is the symbol of a series of events: of a succession of tensions and efforts and motions.

Great composers such as Bach and Tchaicovsky also used wordpainting in their pieces, (great examples are Bach Cantata BWV 78) it is very important for helping us to visualise the lyrics while listening to the music.

In bars 24 to 25, the lyric 'drop' is falling, which is sung an uneven nine number of times and is detached. This is an example of word painting. - to represent snakes dropping from Alecto's head.

Pizzicato is a playing technique for bowed string instruments which produces a short and percussive sound. When played, the notes should be plucked with fingers instead of bowed. Arco indicates the end of Pizzicato.

Music vs spirituality. Music is a spiritual expression of universal nature. Music plays an integral role in spirituality as it communicates emotion, thoughts, religion, and culture. Ludwig Van Beetoven quoted that “Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life”.

Music notes are symbols that denote a musical sound. Notes also represent the pitch and duration of the sound, known as musical notation. Therefore, knowing the music notes meaning helps the musician not only read music, but understand the rhythm the notes should follow.
