Updated on 06/03/17. Tranquillo means to play in a calm and relaxed tempo, at about 80 BPM. Tranquillo translates to "tranquilly; calmly."

The word tranquilo is an adjective, as a command it means “be calm”. On the other hand cálmate is a verb in imperative, already a command: “calm down”. So if your interlocutor is still calm and you want him/her to remind calm, you can use tranquilo (be calm), or calma (keep the calm), but not quite cálmate (calm down).

I know "tranquilo" directly translates to calm down / relax. But I've heard it used so frequently. Telling someone to calm down in English can often be somewhat impolite.
