Ternary form in musicTernary form, sometimes called song form , is a three-part musical form consisting of an opening section (**A**), a following contrasting section (**B**) and then a repetition of the opening section (**A**).

The **A** section introduces musical material that is then developed in the **B** section , which usually has a contrasting mood or key. The **A** section then repeats to provide structural balance and completeness.

Ternary form is a relatively **simple and balanced** musical structure that is commonly found in **smaller instrumental compositions** such as **minuets**, **trios** and **sonatinas**. It is also used for elements within larger forms, such as the individual movements of a symphony.

A compositional form which consists of three major sections, an A section which states the thematic material, a B section which presents a contrasting theme, and a final A section which restates the opening thematic material. Also, any three part form.
