What does “Tafelmusik” mean, and where does the name come from? Literally “table music” from the German, meaning music written for feasts or entertainments, Tafelmusik was the name given to several collections of music published in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Some of the most significant composers of table music included Johann Hermann Schein, whose Banchetto musicale of 1617 acquired considerable fame, and Michael Praetorius, who wrote about the phenomenon of Tafelmusik in his Syntagma musicum of 1619.
