Stems in music are packaged groups of multiple tracks that have been layered together. For example, a snare drum sound is a single track while a recording of an entire drum kit is a stem. Another is a single electric guitar track while four or five guitars layered on top of one another in a stem.

Music stems (or 'song stems', or just good old-fashioned 'stems' – you get the idea!) are a type of audio file that breaks down a complete track into individual mixes. This allows you, as a creator, to control each of the particular mixes for your production.

Significance of Music Stems You can take the stems from one track and use them to create a new track without it sounding like the same song. Stems are also far easier to store as they don't take up as much space as bouncing each individual track. This can also make submitting to supervisors a whole lot more organized.

Stems are actually subgroups of tracks, like you might have a stereo stem of a drum set or a stereo stem of all the guitars or all the keyboards. Original multitracks with everything separate, with all the drums on separate channels, those are not called stems.

The Four Types of Music Stems

• The lead vocal stem: As the name suggests, this stem includes only the lead vocal track.
• The backing vocal stem: This stem includes all of the backing vocal tracks in a song.
• The instrument stem: The instrument stem contains all of the instruments in a song, excluding the lead vocal.

A stem is simply a submix that 'stems' from the main mix. They are also sometimes called 'splits' for the same reason. Most common stems in film are dialog, music and effects but often stems of large scale music mixes with high track counts are also delivered to make the final mix more manageable.
