Spinto soprano Also lirico-spinto, Italian for "pushed lyric". This voice has the brightness and height of a lyric soprano, but can be "pushed" to dramatic climaxes without strain, and may have a somewhat darker timbre. Spinto sopranos have a range from approximately middle C (C4) to "high D" (D6).

Typical spinto roles would be Cavaradossi (Tosca), Calaf (Turandot), Canio (Pagliacci), Radames (Aida), Manrico (Trovatore), Don Carlo (Don Carlo) but occasionally ranging through to Verdi's Otello.

all mezzos had deep voices and powerful chest tones, not just the dramatic ones. if you had a "medium" voice, you would probably train as a spinto or dramatic soprano rather than a mezzo of any kind. Jaime has a gorgeous, huge voice with an extension up to C, but is most definitely mezzo in color.

I am ignoring Richard Tucker, a typical spinto tenor (already featured on www.interlude.hk), as well as the late 20th century Three Tenor phenomenon, though Pavarotti and Carreras would qualify as exemplary spintos.

The fact that spinto sopranos are uncommon means that parts that are ideal for their voices are often performed by singers from other classifications, and more than a few lyric sopranos have damaged their voices singing heavier spinto roles.
