The tuning slide, which is the largest slide on the trumpet, is a c-shaped metal tube that can slide in and out to finely adjust the tuning of the instrument. The further out the slide is placed, the lower the tone the trumpet will produce.

Evidently, Slide trumpets were used throughout Europe. In Germany they were known as zugtrompete, while in Italy they were called tromba da tirarsi. The slide trumpet underwent further development in England, where it was given a double slide like the sackbut. The instrument was known as the Flatt trumpet.

Most of the instrument is made of what we would now call gold-brass: brass with a high copper content. The standard Kohler slide trumpets were made of the same alloy, as were those ofmany other makers.

The trombone is the only instrument in the brass family that uses a slide instead of valves to change pitch. A standard trombone is made of long thin brass pipes. Two U-shaped pipes are linked at opposite ends to form an "S." One pipe slides into the other so the total length of the pipe can be extended or shortened.

A slide is a part of a wind instrument consisting of two (or more) pieces of tubing fitted one closely inside the other, and used to vary the overall length of the tube, and therefore the pitch of the instrument. The slide trumpet is one of the earliest brass instruments of the Renaissance and is used, for example, as Tromba di tirarsi parts in the Alta Cappella. The concept of our Renaissance slide trumpet is a reconstruction based on an altarpiece by Hans Memling, c. 1490, on which 3 trumpet-playing angels are depicted.

A proper slide trumpet has a large, conical bore. A soprano trombone will have a straighter bore. Otherwise they're in the same key and, as you know, almost the same range as a trumpet (no low A, or 7th position if you're a trombone player).

Rather than holding the instrument in place and moving the slide, slide trumpet players hold the mouthpiece and move the majority of the instrument. With the advancement of more modern trumpet varieties, the slide trumpet is certainly cumbersome and difficult to play, but it makes for a fun skill to showcase!
