In music, call and response is a technique where one musician offers a phrase and a second player answers with a direct commentary or response to the offered phrase. The musicians build on each other's offering and work together to move the song along and create a sound that's inventive and collective.

There are two main types of call and response patterns in music: leader/chorus call and response, and question/answer call and response.

A single leader makes a musical statement, and then the chorus responds together. American bluesman Muddy Waters utilizes call and response in one of his signature songs, "Mannish Boy" which is almost entirely leader/chorus call and response. Another example is from Chuck Berry's "School Day (Ring Ring Goes the Bell)".

Calls are sometimes used to notify other birds in their flock, or family group, that a newly discovered food source is nearby. Young birds use begging calls to tell their parents that they wish to be fed. Songs are used when birds are claiming or protecting their territory or to attract a mate.

In the classroom, call and response is typically used by a teacher as a cue for students to stop what they're doing and pay attention. So, for example, a teacher may call out '1, 2, 3, eyes on me,' and students know to stop what they're doing and respond with '1, 2, eyes on you.

The idea is simple: a statement is made or a question asked, and the response or answer follows. Sometimes the response is simply a repetition of the leader's call, and sometimes it's a traditional statement of affirmation. You hear this in music of all kinds, but most notably in the blues.

In a singing call, the dancers execute a sequence of calls (figure), and then take their corner dancer as their new partner. The new couple promenades to the boy's home. The figures are repeated three more times, and after the last figure each dancer gets his or her original partner back.

Use a standard greeting, such as “Thank you for calling [company name], this is [your name]. How may I assist you?” or “Good morning/afternoon, thank you for calling [company name], this is [your name].” Using a standard greeting helps to ensure consistency across all calls.

The title of this exhibition, Call/Response, refers to a traditional musical form often used in the context of communal worship. It is a form that is typically repetitive and rigidly structured, but its enactment allows for constant variation and elaboration by the participants.
