Rhythm and blues Rhythm and blues, commonly known as R&B, is a musical genre developed by Black Americans in the 1940s that's been continuously refined through the present day. R&B derived from gospel, jazz, folk, and traditional blues music and emerged in tandem with rock 'n' roll.

R&B vocals are typically clean, electing not to use much if any distortion; it's more about the character of the singer's voice. You'll also hear a lot of heavily autotuned vocals; not on every song, but on many of them.

In regard to structure, the A-B-A-B-C-B form was the most popular (verse – chorus – verse – chorus – bridge – chorus). All of the songs contain an intro, the majority feature a bridge, half contain a pre-chorus and outro, and none contain a prominent instrumental and/or vocal break within the mix.

There's a few difference between R&B and Hip-Hop. Firstly, Hip-Hop is related to rap and rap is something like poetry you gotta rhyme and spit out through tracks. R&B is a kind of music where the tracks are kind of rap tracks but the R&B singers doesn't rap they sing normally but not like blues or something else.

As mentioned, early R&B was mostly driven by the guitar. But most contemporary R&B has migrated to keyboards, synthesizers, and drum machines. Some R&B artists, like Alicia Keys, prefer acoustic pianos, but the electronic keyboard and software loops have been embraced by the genre.

Historically speaking, though, "rhythm and blues" as we understand it today most often describes a style of music that developed after World War II that combines elements of pop, gospel, blues and jazz with a strong back beat.

One of the most recognisable major-key R&B chord progressions is C – E – G – B – D (Cmaj9) into B – Eb – Gb – A (Bmin7). This is a great starting point for a chord progression in your R&B song.
