foot The “ped” in “pedal” derives from the Latin word “pes, pedis” (foot).

Ped. (or sometimes just P.) means pedal down. I come to another Ped. in the score.

two pedals [English, two pedals] A directive found in piano compositions indicating the use of both the damper pedal (right) and the soft pedal (una corda or left) at the same time. In French compositions, the phrase les deux pedales is often seen. This directive comes from the days when pianos only had two pedals.

On written music, pedal markings show where you place your foot down, and when to raise it again. Each pedal is marked slightly differently, but the principle is the same: Sustain (damper) pedal: Down = “Ped.” Up = “✱” Sostenuto pedal: Down = “Sost.

In soil science, peds are aggregates of soil particles formed as a result of pedogenic processes; this natural organization of particles forms discrete units separated by pores or voids.

The Latin root word ped and its Greek counterpart pod both mean “foot.” These roots are the word origin of many English vocabulary words, including pedal centipede, podium, and podiatrist. Humans, for instance, are bipedal because they walk on two “feet,” whereas a tripod is a stand for a camera that has three “feet.”

both pedals In composers like Debussy & Ravel, "2 Ped" is an abbreviation for "les deux pédales" or in English, "both pedals" - meaning to depress both the sustain and una corda pedals. As above, the pianos they used typically did not have the middle or sostenuto pedal, so "both pedals" were all the pedals there were to use.

[Italian, as before] A musical directive to the performer to return to a previous tempo, to play a particular passage in the manner of a previous passage, or to repeat a passage.

Duple “Duple” refers to the two beats per measure.

The accelerator is also known as gas pedal. It is the pedal located on the floor on the far-right. This pedal controls the amount of gas being fed into the engine and thereby controls the speed of the vehicle. You push the accelerator with your right foot with your heel resting on the ground.

Modern pianos usually have three pedals, from left to right, the soft pedal (or una corda), the sostenuto pedal, and the sustaining pedal (or damper pedal). Some pianos omit the sostenuto pedal, or have a middle pedal with a different purpose such as a muting function also known as silent piano.

Performance enhancing drugs are often shortened to the acronym P.E.D. by the various agencies and sports federations that monitor their usage by athletes. Most sports ban drug use by competitors.
