A Voice in music can refer to an independent melody or melodic line in a musical texture. Voicing is a term sometimes used by pianists to describe the dynamics (the different volume levels) of different voices in a musical texture. A Chord Voicing is the way that the notes of a chord are arranged or spelled.

A related phenomenon is "voice overlapping," where the voices do not cross per se, but they move together, and the lower voice passes where the upper voice was (or vice versa). For example, if two voices sound G and B, and move up to C and E.

The four main voices are typically labelled as soprano (or treble and countertenor), alto (contralto, countertenor or mezzo), tenor, and bass.

Thus, in music for piano and other multi-voiced instruments, the different range notes are called voices: the lowest is bass, the highest is soprano, and the middle parts can be called tenor or alto, depending on where they lie in the pitch range.

The four main vocal ranges are:

Four-part harmony is a system of organising chords for four voices: soprano, alto, tenor and bass (or SATB).
