NARD

In the Song of Solomon, 'nard' is a type of essential oil made from the spikenard plant. It is a deep amber in color and has a pleasing fragrance. For this reason, it was used as perfume in Ancient Israel.

The adjective “pure” (nard) in Greek is “pistikos” which means pure, trustworthy, genuine or unadulterated. Nard gives off a pleasant aroma and we are told in Eph 5:2 to live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Nard, or Spikenard is a pale yellow or amber-coloured liquid with a heavy, sweet-woody, spicy-animal odour, somewhat similar to Valerian oil.

Some take it to mean genuine, and others liquid. The most probable opinion is that the word pistike designates the nard as genuine or faithfully prepared.
