Like the theorbo, the archlute is a very large instrument, with a long neck and two peg boxes. The archlute's peg boxes are staggered at the end of the neck instead of one being off to the side, as with the theorbo. The archlute's tonal range is toward the tenor (like the lute), rather than the bass (like the theorbo).

The main differences between the archlute and the "baroque" lute of northern Europe are that the baroque lute has 11 to 13 courses, while the archlute typically has 14, and the tuning of the first six courses of the baroque lute outlines a d-minor chord, while the archlute preserves the tuning of the Renaissance lute, ...

Theorbos are essentially a single strung archlute tuned a tone higher. The most distinctive feature of a theorbo is the re-entrant tuning, meaning the top two strings are pitched one octave below normal pitch.

Six pairs of strings extend above the gut-fretted fingerboard, while eight single bass strings are fastened into a second extended pegbox.

The pegbox for lutes before the Baroque era was angled back from the neck at almost 90° (see image), presumably to help hold the low-tension strings firmly against the nut which, traditionally, is not glued in place but is held in place by string pressure only.

The lute is not an easy instrument to learn on your own. We recommend that you find a teacher to help ensure that you develop healthy and effective technique, as it's much more difficult to correct poor technique than it is to learn it right the first time, and much easier to prevent injuries than to recover from them.

A lute is a stringed musical instrument that surged to popularity in Renaissance Europe. It resembles a guitar but has a rounded back, a pear shape, courses (pairs) of strings and a long neck with a bent-back pegbox.

Historically, theorbos came in several sizes, almost all of them larger than the average modern instrument. The largest are instruments by Buchenberg and Graill, which have stopped string lengths of 98-99 cm.

The theorbo has a long neck – some as long as six feet. It has two sets of strings – a longer set tuned with pegs at the top of the fret board (for the deeper range), and a shorter set tuned by pegs on the sides of the fret board (for the higher range).

64 to 67 cm It can be built with a string length ranging from 64 to 67 cm. The shorter version (640 mm) retains 8 tied frets in the fingerboard and has the advantage of having the possibility to be tuned at both a=440 and 415 Hz.
