A major scale is a scale in which the third scale degree (the mediant) is a major third above the tonic note. In a minor scale, the third degree is a minor third above the tonic. Similarly, in a major triad or major seventh chord, the third is a major third above the chord's root.

Identify Happy vs. Sad Sounds. The easiest way to recognise the difference between major and minor keys is to consider the emotion their sounds evoke – major keys have a bright, happy, and cheerful melody; while minor keys sound more melancholy and sad. Here's a couple of examples: “Happy Birthday” in A Major.

In a minor scale, the 3rd note that comprises the scale or chord will always be flattened (or lowered) by a half-step. This is what gives a minor chord its somber sound. Music is all about patterns. Once you know those “rules” and patterns, you can figure out pretty much anything on your own.

The steps of a major scale are (whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half). In most cases we need to use sharps and flats to help us make these steps possible. For example, a D major scale would be (DEF#GABC#D). A minor scale is (whole, half, whole, whole, half, whole, whole).

Major is a Latin word that means "greater" as compared to minor that means "less." As a military rank it started out in the Sixteenth Century or earlier as Sergeant Major, who was the "greater" of the Sergeants.

The pattern is defined by a series of tones. And semitones between the notes. If you don't remember or unfamiliar with tones and semitones a semitone is the smallest interval on the piano.

Western adults and children reliably perceive major chords and melodies as 'bright and happy', whereas minor chords are typically heard as 'dark and sad'.

This is reliably identified by Western adults and children as a happy chord. Then by simply lowering the middle note by a semitone – one white or black key to the left on a piano – this is turned into a 'minor' chord, which is typically heard as sad.

A Minor in Music allows a student to include a study of music as part of a liberal arts education, and to combine it with other fields of study. The minor requires 20-21 hours, which includes credit for performing in ensembles, attending music performances, and studio lessons and electives.

While Majors seek to achieve a career goal, Minors seek to compliment it. Although not mandatory, Minors give you an extra competitive advantage for the future. Minors are displayed next to your Major in the Bachelor's diploma and can help illustrate your career goals and/or your personal interests.

You can also look to the melody of a song and notice where it ends. Melodies typically resolve to the tonic note of the key. Again, if a song's melody notes all fit within C major/A minor and the final melody note is C, it's in C major. If it ends on A, it's in A minor.
