Luthier

The word luthier is originally French and comes from the French word for "lute". The term was originally used for makers of lutes, but it came to be used in French for makers of most bowed and plucked stringed instruments such as members of the violin family (including violas, cellos, and double basses) and guitars.

A luthier is an artisan who makes or repairs stringed instruments such as cellos, violins, guitars, mandolins, dulcimers and banjos. The word luthier comes from the French word luth, which means lute, and the art of making and repairing instruments is a centuries-old tradition.

Andrea Amati Andrea Amati of Cremona, Italy, is widely credited as the first recorded luthier to craft a four-string violin – an instrument that has become the standard we recognise today. Luthiers do not repair or build pianos, although pianos do have strings. Pianos are constructed and tuned differently than guitars, and, as most of us know, played differently (see above), so the motor skills between instruments don't translate easily.

Who made the first violin? The oldest existing violin, built by Andrea Amati. Compared to its ancestors, the violin is in a class by itself in terms of completeness. In addition, it was not improved gradually over time, but appeared in its current form suddenly around 1550.

Antonio Stradivari Italian luthier, Antonio Stradivari, has been widely regarded as the greatest violin maker in history for quite some time. Born in Cremona in or around 1644, Stradivari was a pupil of Nicolò Amati when he began his career as a violin maker.
