tessitura, (Italian: “texture”), in music, the general range of pitches found in a melody or vocal part. It differs from the compass of a piece to the extent that it does not take into account the extremes of the piece's range but is concerned with the way in which the vocal line is arranged or situated.

Tessitura (Italian for "texture) refers to where most of the vocal line or notes lie in a song. For example, the chorus of Katy Perry's “Teenage Dream” has a vocal range of G4 to D5, which is just over a half-octave and is not extremely large.

Compasses normally come in three different styles.

• Baseplate Compass. The most typical compass is normally referred to as a Baseplate Compass.
• Mirrored Baseplate Compass.
• Lensatic Compasses.

Sopranos Soprano: this is the highest singing voice, with the highest tessitura. It is also the most common female voice. Sopranos are given prominent singing roles, and are often the protagonists of the opera. They can sing from the middle C to two octaves higher (that is, an interval of 15 full notes in total).

In choral music arrangements each of these voices is represented by a letter - S for soprano, A for alto, T for tenor, and B for bass. Most choral music is arranged SATB, using a voice part from each of the four major classifications.

The four cardinal directions, or cardinal points, are the four main compass directions: north, south, east, and west, commonly denoted by their initials N, S, E, and W respectively.
