Laurens Hammond began producing organs in 1935 in Chicago, Illinois, making use of the same sound generation method. However, he used much smaller tone generators and fewer registers. The patent for his model A organ dates from 1934.

Its sustained sound added a new dimension to jazz and blues. Before the Hammond organ, jazz and blues bands could not use acoustic pipe organs because virtually all pipe organs were installed in churches and orchestra concert halls, places that jazz and blues bands were not able to rehearse or play.

The Hammond has been used in many genres of music from rock to jazz to reggae. Since its inception, almost two million Hammonds have been manufactured.

The Hammond organ was originally created as a cheaper alternative to church pipe organs, and was quickly adopted by jazz musicians such as Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Bill Doggett, Milt Buckner, and Wild Bill Davis who pioneered its use in jazz, paving the way for its use in blues, rock, soul, and other genres.

The spinning treble horn and bass rotor gave the Hammond Organ a “tremulant”, as it's called in the pipe organ world. Pitch-changing vibrato, volume-changing Tremolo, and a little “whoosh” of moving air all put together. It made the Hammond Organ sound completely different.
