A pause sign tells you to hold the note or rest for slightly longer than its written value.

The half note gets two beats; so you will play the note and count to two. The dotted half note gets three beats and the duration with four beats is the whole note. How Dots Work: You may have noticed that certain notes have a dot next to them (like the dotted half note).
