There are different definitions for Geographic Information System, each developed from a different perspective or disciplinary origin. Some focus on the map connection, some stress the database or the software tool kit and others emphasis applications such as decision support.

Roger Tomlinson While digital GIS dates to the mid-1960s, when Roger Tomlinson first coined the phrase "geographic information system", many of the geographic concepts and methods that GIS automates date back decades earlier.

GIS stands for geographic information system, which is a tool that creates, manages, gathers, analyses and maps all types of data. With GIS, you can visualise different types and layers of mapping data to see trends and monitor changes within an area.

Functions of GIS include: data entry, data display, data management, information retrieval and analysis. A more comprehensive and easy way to define GIS is the one that looks at the disposition, in layers (Figure 1), of its data sets.

GIS requires storing of attributes of spatial objects. DBMS are required to handle these data. DBMS functionality can be coded within GIS software or external commercial DBMS may be utilized by GIS. For example, ILWIS software itself handles its attribute data.

Types of GIS Imagery Imagery that is used in GIS can include aerial photos, satellite images, thermal images, digital elevation models (DEMs), scanned maps, land classification maps and surfaces created from a previous analysis that are saved as an image (Managing Imagery with ArcGIS 10).
