sonata-allegro form sonata form, also called first-movement form or sonata-allegro form, musical structure that is most strongly associated with the first movement of various Western instrumental genres, notably, sonatas, symphonies, and string quartets.

The first movement is, by definition, written in sonata form, in a fast tempo (allegro), and in the home key of the overall piece. This movement can also be called the sonata-allegro.

What is a movement? A longer piece of classical music is often broken up into smaller, bite-sized chunks. It makes it easier to perform and listen to, and provides a bit of contrast. It's like having a four-course meal instead of loading yourself up with a big plate of cheesy pasta.

The first movement is a fast lively movement in a double-exposition sonata form (the orchestra introduces the primary melodic themes in full before the soloist enters to repeat the same material). Sonata form consists of three parts: exposition, development, and recapitulation.
