Meaning of English Fingerings in Music
English fingerings in music refer to a specific system of finger notation used in older editions of piano music. This system assigns numbers to the fingers and indicates the thumb with either a plus sign (+) or a cross (x). The other fingers are numbered from 1 (index finger) to 4 (pinky).
English fingerings are seldom used nowadays, but you may still find them in older piano music editions. They provide a way to indicate which fingers should be used to play specific notes or passages on the piano.
A system of notating keyboard fingering that is now obsolete. This system used the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 for the fingers and an (x) for the thumb. Modern fingering notation uses a 1 to notate the thumb, and 2, 3, 4, and 5 for the fingers.
