In musical terminology, divisi, or as typically printed “div.,” is an instruction to divide a single section of instruments into multiple subsections.

Music is divided into equal parts called MEASURES. BAR LINES indicate the beginning and end of measures. The distance between two bar lines is called a measure. DOUBLE BAR LINES, one thin and one thick, show the end of a piece.

As you may have noticed, the basic beat is not the only regular pulse. Listen to Example 2–1 again. This time, as you are tapping your foot to the beat tap your hand twice per beat. This faster pulse - twice as fast, in this case - is referred to as the beat division.

But when it comes to our familiar 12 notes, it's not all about frequency – in fact, frequency hasn't created this set of 12. We typically use just 12 notes in Western music because of the spaces – or intervals – between the notes. Pieces of music are familiar entirely because of these intervals.

Vertical black bars called bar lines divide the staff into bars (or “measures”). This staff has been split into two measures. This stave has been split into two bars. Time signatures define the amount and type of notes that each measure contains.

A note value can be divided and subdivided in equal parts. Take for example the quarter note in the chart below. It is worth one beat, therefore it can be divided into two equal beats. One eighth note is worth half a beat, so two eighth notes equals one beat and make up one quarter note.

Each beat is a quarter note and there are 4 quarter notes in a whole measure, or bar, of 4/4 music. When you evenly divide the quarter note beat in two, you get two eighth notes. When you evenly divide the quarter note beat in four, you get four sixteenth notes.

It's often said that music unites us and songs can be a powerful force in spreading messages of peace.
