The starting point for a diminished chord is a minor triad. As always, it's made up of the root note, the minor third, and the fifth. Here's a C-minor triad: Diminished means something which has been made smaller.

Three notes can also be diminished by lowering the chord, taking it from a major chord to a minor chord. For example, lowering the note from E to E-flat makes it a minor chord. Another example could be if C major chord was played as: C, E, G.

Lower any of the four notes of any diminished chord by half step, and you have a dominant 7. Therefore any given diminished is only one half step move away from 4 different dominants. E.g. C#dim (C#-E-G-Bb) lowers C# to become C7, etc.

Diminished chords have a flat fifth degree compared to a minor chord, so the formula for a diminished triad is always 1 – ♭3 – ♭5.

For two reasons: first, it contains 6 semitones and 6 is the number of the devil; and it's inherent dissonance has never been acceptable to musicians. Why do major and minor chords have a different impact?

Diminished chords have a distinct, eerie quality. They consist of a series of minor third intervals, giving them an unstable sound that's perfect for creating tension. The next time you're around a musical instrument, try playing a diminished chord and feel the chills run down your spine.

Note on which you want to build an augmented or a diminished triad. Simply count eight and four half steps semitones for an augmented. Or count six. And three semitones or half steps for a diminished.

I To resolve a diminished 7th chord, the leading tone (which is the root) must resolve up. The rest of the chord members resolve down. There is a little flexibility with the third of the chord to resolve up if needed. A vii°7 chord is made up entirely of stacked minor 3rds.

The diminished seventh chord occurs as a leading-tone seventh chord in the harmonic minor scale. It typically has dominant function and contains two diminished fifths, which often resolve inwards.
