The starting point for a diminished chord is a minor triad. As always, it's made up of the root note, the minor third, and the fifth. Here's a C-minor triad: Diminished means something which has been made smaller.

Three notes can also be diminished by lowering the chord, taking it from a major chord to a minor chord. For example, lowering the note from E to E-flat makes it a minor chord. Another example could be if C major chord was played as: C, E, G.
