D.S.

Dal Segno D.S., or Dal Segno, means “from the sign.” It directs the player to return to a spot earlier in the score that's marked by the symbol. If the marking says D.S. al Coda, then the player is supposed to play from the to a “To Coda” marking, then jump to a coda section at the end of the music. See Coda.

Da Capo (quite literally, “from the head”), in a musical context, means “repeat from the beginning.” Dal Segno means “repeat from the sign.” StaffPad supports both types of repeat structures, including playing to a coda sign or to a specified end within the score (“Fine”).

What is an example of a coda? Codas can be found in classical or popular music. An example of a coda in popular music is the "nah nah" chorus at the end of "Hey Jude" by the Beatles. This section sounds like a finale, while also reinforcing the themes within the rest of the song.

1. Choose the Repeat tool .
2. Double-click the measure in which you want the sign to appear. The Repeat Selection dialog box appears.
3. Double-click the sign. The Text Repeat Assignment dialog box appears.
4. Click Never Jump (Mark).
5. Click OK (or press RETURN ).

A coda in these genres is sometimes referred to as an "outro", while in jazz, modern church music and barbershop arranging it is commonly called a "tag". One of the most famous codas is found in the 1968 single "Hey Jude" by the Beatles.

A coda is a passage at the end of a piece of music that brings the music to a close. It can technically be considered a longer cadence.

al Fine means return to the sign and stop at the Fine. D.C. al Coda means return to the beginning and play to the sign and then skip to the coda. D.S. al Coda means return to the sign and then skip to the coda.

D.S. al fine means to start back at the segno mark and continue playing until you reach the final barline, or a double-barline marked with the word fine. This command stands for dal segno al fine, and literally means "[play] from the sign to the end." (See the segno sign in the picture.)
