D sharp

D major (or the key of D) is a major scale based on D, consisting of the pitches D, E, F♯, G, A, B, and C♯. Its key signature has two sharps.

D is a musical note a whole tone above C, and is known as Re within the fixed-Do solfege system. Its enharmonic equivalents are C (C-double sharp) and E. (E-double flat). It is the third semitone of the solfège.

A person with absolute pitch would not be able to tell you one note is a D# while another is Eb. Acoustically, they are exactly the same. In terms of music theory, a note would be called either D# or Eb depending on what key it appears in. Western music is divided into groups of sharp keys and flat keys.

In classical theory, and according to the Circle of Fifths, there is no key of D# major (it is always called Eb major). But, if there were, you would use the double sharps for this reason: All major and minor scales have one of each letter from A through G, and only one of each.

There is a D♯ major scale, it's just rather rare you'll have anything written in that key. In this key you have no natural notes and all notes are either sharps or double sharps which is the same with any sharp key besides F♯ and C♯.
