Meaning of Cut Time in Music
Cut time, also known as alla breve, is a time signature in music that signifies two half notes per measure or the equivalent in other note values or rests. It is represented by the time signature 2/2, where the top number indicates the number of beats per measure and the bottom number represents the type of note worth one beat. Another way to represent cut time is with a C with a line through it. Cut time is different from common time (4/4) in that the beats in cut time feel larger and follow a strong-weak-strong-weak pattern, as opposed to the strong-weak-medium-weak pattern in common time. In other words, cut time feels twice as fast as common time.
