counterpoint, art of combining different melodic lines in a musical composition.

Contrapuntal rhythm or rhythmic counterpoint is the process of contrasting two melodic lines with different rhythmic patterns. For example, voice one might be performing a fast note rhythm, while the second voice is performing a long note rhythm.

The term originates from the Latin punctus contra punctum meaning "point against point", i.e. "note against note".

The counterpoint must begin and end on a perfect consonance, usually octave or unison but other consonants sometimes are used as well. Contrary motion is most prevalent, but oblique motion and parallel motion are also common. Perfect consonances must be approached by oblique or contrary motion.

A counterpoint is something that contrasts, and to counterpoint is to provide a contrast. In music, counterpoint is when two separate melodies are played or sung at the same time.
