Walton's early work made him one of England's most important composers between the wars. He gained national recognition for his Viola Concerto, and his Symphony No. 1 in B-Flat Minor, which was performed by the London Symphony Orchestra in 1935, helped to establish his reputation as a composer of international standing. Additionally, Walton was known for his film scores, including the music for Laurence Olivier's film adaptation of Shakespeare's Henry V and the Battle of Britain.
Throughout his life, Walton had many important collaborations. He first encountered the Sitwell siblings, with whom he was to have an important musical and literary partnership, at Oxford University. His collaboration with the Sitwells resulted in several works, including the Façade suite for speaker and small ensemble and the ballet The Wise Virgins.
