Short bio Vladimir Ussachevsky
Full biography Vladimir Ussachevsky
Vladimir Ussachevsky was a Russian-American composer who was born on November 3, 1911, in Hailar, Manchuria (now China). He began his music career as a violinist but later shifted his focus to composition. In 1931, he moved to the United States and enrolled at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.
Ussachevsky was one of the pioneers of electronic music and is best known for his experiments with tape music and musique concrète. In the late 1940s, he began working with tape recorders, creating electronic sounds that were previously unheard of in classical music. He is credited with co-founding the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center at Columbia University in 1959, which later became a leading institution for electronic music and sound art.
Ussachevsky's music was characterized by a unique blend of electronic and orchestral sounds, resulting in compositions that were both complex and accessible. His works often featured unusual timbres, rhythms, and harmonies, reflecting his fascination with the latest technological developments in music.
Some of his notable compositions include "Piece for Tape Recorder" (1956), "Wireless Fantasy" (1960), and "Two Sketches for Orchestra with Tape" (1964). Ussachevsky was also an accomplished teacher, and many of his students went on to become successful composers and performers.
Ussachevsky passed away on January 4, 1990, in New York City, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire new generations of electronic music composers. His work remains an important contribution to the development of electronic music and the integration of technology into classical music.
