Ton de Leeuw was a prolific Dutch composer, born in Rotterdam on November 16, 1926. He studied composition with Henk Badings at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague from 1946 to 1949, and later with Olivier Messiaen in Paris. He also briefly studied electronic music with Pierre Schaeffer at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales in Paris.

De Leeuw's music is characterized by its exploration of eastern music and philosophy, specifically Indonesian Gamelan music, which he encountered during a visit to Indonesia in the early 1950s. He spent ten months studying the music, and this experience heavily influenced his compositional style. He mixed eastern and western elements in his music, creating a unique synthesis of styles.

De Leeuw's music is often characterized by its complex rhythms and dense harmonies, which are influenced by Indonesian Gamelan music. His compositions often feature large ensembles, with intricate parts for each instrument. His music can be challenging to perform and requires skilled musicians to execute his vision.

One of De Leeuw's most famous works is his composition "Mouvements Retrogrades", which he composed in 1958 for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, and double bass. The piece is notable for its use of retrograde techniques, in which the musical material is played backwards, creating a sense of musical symmetry and balance.

De Leeuw's contributions to the world of contemporary music earned him numerous awards, including the prestigious Edison Award in 1975. He continued to compose and teach until his death in Paris on May 31, 1996. His works continue to be performed and studied by musicians and music scholars around the world.
