Full biography Robin Milford
Robin Humphrey Milford (22 January 1903 - 29 December 1959) was an English composer and music teacher. He was born in Oxford and was educated at Magdalen College School and Christ Church, Oxford, where he studied music under Hugh Allen. He went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where he was a composition student of Ralph Vaughan Williams, who had a profound impact on his music.
Milford's music is characterized by a lyrical and pastoral style, often incorporating elements of English folk music. While he was respected during his lifetime, his music has been largely overlooked since his death and is not widely performed today.
Milford's output includes works in a variety of genres, including orchestral music, chamber music, choral music, songs, and works for solo instruments. Notable works include his Symphony in B flat, his Concertino for String Orchestra, and his Cello Sonata.
Milford suffered from poor health throughout his life, which limited his output and may have contributed to his relative obscurity. He died of a heart attack in 1959 at the age of 56.
Since his death, there has been renewed interest in Milford's music, and several recordings of his works have been released. The Robin Milford Trust was established in his memory to promote and support the performance and study of his music.
