Philip Wilby (born in Pontefract in 1949) is a British composer, organist, and choir director. He is known for his versatile compositions that range from brass band and orchestral works to operas and liturgical music. He studied music at Oxford University, where he earned a BMus and then a DMus.
Wilby has written extensively for brass bands and is considered one of the finest composers for this genre. He has composed numerous works for brass bands, including "Lowry Sketchbook," "Masquerade," and "Paganini Variations," which have become popular among brass band enthusiasts.
Aside from brass band music, Wilby has also written several choral works and liturgical music for the Anglican Church. He has composed a setting of the "St. John Passion," which was premiered in 1997 and has since become a staple of the Church's choral repertoire.
Wilby is also an academic and has authored several academic papers on the subject of music and its place in society. He has held academic posts at various academic institutions in the UK and is currently a visiting professor at the Royal Northern College of Music.
Wilby's contributions to brass band music have not gone unnoticed, and he has been awarded numerous prestigious accolades. In 1995, he was a featured composer in the PRS for Music/BBC Young Composer Competition, and in 2005, he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Northern College of Music. In recent years, he has been heavily involved in the Black Dyke Band organization, acting as an advisor and mentor for young composers.
