Sir Philip Stevens Ledger (12 December 1937 – 18 November 2012) was an English classical musician , choirmaster, and academic, known for his contributions to choral music. He served as the Master of Music at the choir of King's College, Cambridge, and later at Westminster Abbey. Ledger was known for his virtuosic organ playing and conducting. Throughout his professional career, he conducted and performed with numerous orchestras and choirs across the globe, and made numerous recordings, including several acclaimed albums.
Ledger was born in Bexhill-on-Sea, England, and began his education as a chorister at Rochester Cathedral. He later went on to study organ at the Royal Academy of Music in London. His professional career began as a school music teacher, but he quickly rose to prominence as a choral conductor and organist. In 1974, Ledger was appointed as the Master of Music at the choir of King's College, Cambridge, where he served until 1982. During his tenure, he directed and conducted numerous performances and recordings with the choir, which became widely popular and critically acclaimed.
Following his time at King's College, Ledger became a professor of music at the University of East Anglia, before being appointed as the director of music at Westminster Abbey in 1988. He held this position for over two decades, and during his time there, he directed and conducted many notable performances and recordings, including the music for the funeral of Princess Diana in 1997 and the wedding of Prince Edward in 1999.
Ledger was also a composer in his own right, and his works have been performed and recorded by numerous ensembles. Additionally, he was an authority on the works of several composers, including Claudio Monteverdi and Samuel Scheidt.
Overall, Sir Philip Ledger was a prolific and influential figure in the world of classical music, and his contributions to choral music are widely recognized and celebrated. He was remembered as a skilled conductor, organist, and composer, as well as a gifted educator and mentor to many young musicians. His legacy continues to inspire and influence musicians to this day.
