Nicholas Lanier was an English composer, singer, lutenist, and painter who lived from 10 September 1588 to 24 February 1666. He was a descendant of a French family of musicians that settled in England in the mid-16th century. Lanier was the first person to hold the title of Master of the King's Music, which he was appointed to in 1625 by King Charles I, and he also served as a court musician and composer to both Charles I and his son, Charles II.
Lanier is known for introducing Italian monody, a type of vocal music that emphasizes melody and a single vocal line accompanied by instrumental music, to England. He is also known for his compositions, which include songs, madrigals, and instrumental pieces, many of which have been preserved in manuscript sources.
In addition to his musical career, Lanier was also a painter and designer of stage scenery. He provided the scenery for several court masques, which were elaborate performances that combined music, dancing, and text, in the early 17th century, and he also painted portraits of several members of the royal family.
