Full biography Matthew Locke
Matthew Locke was an English Baroque composer, born in 1621. He is known for his contributions to English music during the Restoration period, which followed a period of strict Puritanism in the country. During this time, art and music were seen as luxurious, frivolous and unnecessary, and so very little music was produced, and censorship was strict. It was only when the monarchy was restored that music and the arts flourished once again.
Locke began his music career at a young age, joining the Royal College of Music at the age of 15. He worked as an organist in various churches before being appointed as a court musician to King Charles II in 1672. It was during this time that he composed much of his music, including his celebrated work, "The Tempest," which is now considered to be one of the first English operas.
Apart from his vocal music, Locke was also known for his instrumental compositions. He wrote consort music, for groups of instruments, and some of his work for the viola da gamba is still played today. His music is characterized by its use of harmony and melody, and he was known for his experimental approach to musical composition which often went against the traditional rules of music-making.
Overall, Locke is considered to be one of the most important English composers of his time, with his work marking a significant transition in English music from the earlier Renaissance style to the Baroque style. His contribution to the development of the English opera was also significant, making him an important figure in the history of English music.
