Full biography Manuel de Zumaya
Manuel de Zumaya or Manuel de Sumaya was a prominent Mexican composer of the colonial period of New Spain , born around 1678 and passed away on December 21, 1755. He was one of the most notable composers of Mexican Baroque music, second only to Ignacio de Jerusalem. Zumaya began his musical education at an early age, serving as a choirboy at the Cathedral of Mexico City and studying with the cathedral's choir master. Later, he traveled to Puebla and became the chapelmaster of the cathedral there.
Zumaya's musical output included a variety of genres, including choral works, operas, and chamber music. He is particularly renowned for his villancicos, which are traditional Spanish songs, typically sung at Christmas. Some of his most famous works include "La Hierba Sana" and "Dulce Jesus Mío."
Zumaya's music was heavily influenced by the Baroque style, with its complex harmonies, emotional expression, and ornate decorations. His music combined the European Baroque style with traditional Mexican melodies and themes, creating a unique musical fusion that is still appreciated today.
In addition to his accomplishments as a composer, Zumaya was also an accomplished organist. He held several prominent positions in Mexican cathedrals throughout his career and was well-respected by his contemporaries. His music continues to be performed and appreciated today, both in Mexico and around the world.
