Ludwig August Lebrun (1752-1790) was a notable German oboist and composer. He was born on May 2, 1752 and baptized on the same day and died on December 16, 1790. He was considered one of the greatest oboists of his time and contributed significantly to the oboe repertoire. Lebrun spent most of his career playing in the Mannheim orchestra, where he joined as a court musician in 1764 at the age of 12. He quickly became a prominent performer in the orchestra and gained recognition for his virtuosic abilities, especially with the oboe.
In addition to his performing career, Lebrun was also an accomplished composer, with more than 50 works attributed to him. He wrote primarily for the oboe, but also composed for the flute, clarinet, and bassoon, as well as chamber music, symphonies, and operas. His compositions were known for their melodiousness and elegance, which reflected much of the Mannheim style of the time.
Lebrun is said to have had a significant influence on the development of the Classical style in music. Some of his most famous pieces include oboe concertos in D minor and C major, and also his opera "Merope", which was performed in Mannheim in 1783. He also collaborated with other notable composers of the time such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Overall, Lebrun played a crucial role in shaping classical music of the late 18th century and is remembered today as a highly accomplished and influential composer and oboist.
