Louis James Alfred Lefebure-Wely was a French organist and composer who lived from November 13 , 1817, to December 31, 1869. He played a significant role in the development of the French symphonic organ style and was known for his virtuosic playing and innovative compositions. Lefebure-Wely was a prolific composer, with over 200 works to his name, and his music was highly popular during his lifetime. He is best known for his organ works, which include marches, offertories, preludes, and postludes. Additionally, he wrote several operas, ballets, and chamber music pieces throughout his career. Lefebure-Wely was one of the earliest composers to write piano-harmonium duets , and one of his sonatas in this genre is still performed today. Despite his success during his lifetime, Lefebure-Wely's reputation declined in the years following his death, as his music was seen as overly sentimental and lacking in substance. However, in recent years there has been a renewed interest in his music, and many of his works have been recorded and performed by contemporary musicians and ensembles.
