Short bio Josef Myslivecek
Full biography Josef Myslivecek
Josef Mysliveček was a Czech composer who lived from 1737 to 1781. He was born into a family of musicians, and he began his musical education in Prague. Mysliveček later studied in Italy, where he became known as "Il Boemo," or "the Bohemian."
Mysliveček was known for his operas, symphonies, and chamber music. He was a major influence on the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the two composers became close friends. Mozart even named one of his sons after Mysliveček.
Mysliveček's music was highly regarded during his lifetime, and he was a favorite of many European courts. He composed over 20 operas, including "Il Bellerofonte," "L'Olimpiade," and "Semiramide." His other works include symphonies, concertos, and chamber music, such as his string quintets.
Despite his success, Mysliveček lived a tumultuous life. He was known for his excessive drinking and extravagance, and he often found himself in debt. He was eventually excommunicated from the Catholic Church for "immoral behavior."
Mysliveček's music was largely forgotten after his death, but in recent years, there has been renewed interest in his work. His music is known for its lyricism and formal elegance, and it continues to be performed and recorded by musicians today.
