Full biography Jon Leifs
Jón Leifs (May 5, 1899 - July 30, 1968) was an Icelandic composer, pianist, and conductor. He is considered one of Iceland's most important composers and is known for incorporating elements of Icelandic folk music and mythology into his works. Leifs began studying music at a young age and continued his studies in Leipzig, Germany, where he became acquainted with some of the leading composers of the time.
Leifs' early works include pieces for piano and chamber music. Later on, he wrote larger orchestral compositions, including his monumental "Icelandic Saga Symphony," which he completed in 1950. The symphony is considered to be one of the most important Icelandic orchestral works of the 20th century.
In addition to his orchestral works, Leifs also composed songs and choral music, often using Icelandic texts. He was also involved in the recording and preservation of traditional Icelandic music, as well as researching and collecting Icelandic folklore.
Leifs' style was often described as rugged and intense, reflecting his love for Iceland and its landscapes. He experimented with unusual harmonies and innovative arrangements, often incorporating sounds from nature into his compositions.
