John F. Larchet (1884-1967) was an Irish composer , conductor, and teacher who made significant contributions to the development of Irish music during his lifetime. He was born in Dublin to a musical family and showed an aptitude for music from an early age. He studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, where he later taught and served as director from 1940 to 1956.

Larchet was a prolific composer who wrote in a variety of genres, including orchestral, chamber, and choral music, as well as songs and film scores. He also arranged traditional Irish music for orchestration and wrote incidental music for plays by W.B. Yeats, Lady Gregory, and J.M. Synge. His music is known for its fusion of traditional Irish melodies and forms with modern European harmonic and rhythmic techniques.

In addition to his work as a composer, Larchet was a respected conductor who led numerous orchestras and choirs. He was also a dedicated music educator who influenced generations of Irish musicians as a professor at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and as a founder of the Irish Folk Music Society.
