Johannes Martini (c.1440 - late 1497 or early 1498) was a Franco-Flemish composer of the Renaissance period. He was known for his extensive work on Masses, motets, psalms, hymns and some secular songs. Martini was born in Beverley, near Hull, and worked in various locations around Europe, including France and Italy. He was particularly active in the Duchy of Burgundy, which was a major center of musical activity in the 15th century.

Martini was renowned for his technical skill as a composer and was an influential figure in the development of imitation in polyphonic music. Imitation was a technique in which one voice enters with a melody that is then imitated by other voices, creating complex and rich layers of sound. Martini's Masses, in particular, were noted for their intricate imitative counterpoint.

Martini's compositions have been extensively recorded and studied by scholars and performers. His works include Masses such as Missa Assumpsit Jesus and Missa dolorosa, motets like Salve sancta Parens and Gaude gloriosa, and secular songs including Malheur me bat and Fortuna desperata. Many of his compositions were written for important patrons, such as the Court of Burgundy and the Duke of Ferrara.

Overall, Johannes Martini was a significant figure in 15th century music, whose technical skill and innovative use of imitation helped shape the sound of Renaissance polyphony.
