Johann Georg Ebeling was a German composer who was born in Lüneburg on July 8 , 1637. He studied theology at the University of Helmstedt but is best known for his contributions to music. He composed both vocal and instrumental music, including hymns, chorales, and arias. Ebeling is also known as an editor and arranger of hymns and was a highly influential figure in German church music. His hymns were popular in the churches of his time, and many of them are still sung today.

Ebeling is considered one of the most important hymn writers in Germany and is credited with writing several popular hymns, including "Warum sollt ich mich denn grämen" (Why Should Cross and Trial Grieve Me) and "Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gmein" (Now Rejoice, Dear Christians All). He died in Stettin (now Szczecin, Poland) on December 4, 1676, at the age of 39.

Ebeling's works continued to influence German church music even after his death, and his music has been performed and recorded by various musicians and ensembles around the world.
