Johann Baptist Wendling (1723-1797) was an eighteenth-century German flautist and composer who played a significant role in the development of classical flute music. He was a member of the Mannheim school, which was known for its innovative approach to orchestration and use of dynamic shading.

Wendling began his career as a flautist in the Mannheim court orchestra, where he eventually became the principal flute player. He was highly regarded in his time and his virtuosic playing was admired by both audiences and fellow musicians alike. He was also a prolific composer and produced a substantial body of work for the flute, including five sets of trios for flute , violin, and cello.

Wendling was particularly influential in shaping the style and technique of the classical flute. His powerful and distinctive sound, coupled with his highly expressive phrasing and use of ornamentation, greatly influenced the composers who wrote for the flute during this period. One of Wendling's most notable works is his Sonata No. 1 in G for Flute and Guitar, which exhibits his skill in crafting melodic and virtuosic passages for the flute.

Wendling's reputation as a performer and composer continued to grow throughout his career, and he remained an important figure in the Mannheim school until his death in 1797. Today, he is remembered not only as a preeminent practitioner of the instrument but also as a teacher and composer who made significant contributions to the development of classical flute music.
